Bjorn Olsson’s (Union Carbide Production/Soundtrack of our Lives) instrumental pastiche (Gravitational)

I have noticied that in the recent past I have neglected fulfilling my twangy duties. Originally an outlet for bands with a little twang, Songs:Illinois has grown into much more. No longer content with that original mission we are now exploring the forgotten (or at least under-represented) world of garage rock, psych folk, power pop, twee and gothic americana. Don’t worry there’ll be more straight up roots music as soon as I can get my filthy little hands on some, but in the meantime how about some Swedish instrumental, spahgetti western, inspired soundscapes from Bjorn Olsson.

I don’t have the time or the space or the patience to try to explain who or what Bjorn is and the why of it all. Suffice to say, this guy is the founder and former guitarist of Union Carbide Productions/The Soundtrack of Our Lives. This is the fifth in his instumental “sea” series (all self-titled although all depicting sea creatures on the cover). With this release he has created an Ennio Morricone like spahgetti western soundtrack replete with hoof clicks, whistles and sounds from the range. The new release, while self-titled, is unofficially being called the lobster (becasue of the giant lobster on the cover of course). In the US buy it wherever finer indie music is sold or directly through Parasol here (available on Gravitational in Sweden).
