Holy Madre (NONS, March 21)

It’s refreshing when a label gets it and frustrating when they don’t. This one label recently said no to my request to share a song off a new record (despite the fact that the guy at the label admitted to be currently listening to a mix cd culled from music blogs). Like a lot of other people I suspect if he likes what he discovers he’ll buy something from the bands on the mix. The good news side of the story is the Swedish label NONS, which has complied with my two recent requests for mp3′s.

Holy Madre is their upcoming release. You may have heard or seen them referred to in the past as Johan Bogart and Holy Madre. This was the name under which their 2004 debut was sold. Johan is still the creative centerpiece of the band but the revolving and expanding cast of characters has changed. Now it’s 2006 and the band has readied their sophomore release. You can buy it here digitally if you’re in Europe from Kilcktrack.

This self titled release is smooth and accessible pop. It’s got soul but no edge. It’s full of soft corners and sensitive emoting but no attitude. The band freely admits to being inspired by Bruce Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac and Bryan Adams.
