(Swedish) Postcards From SXSW – Final Wrap-up bt The Faintest Ideas (Daniel Johnston, White Ghost Shivers, Gore Gore Girls) and Kristen Dunst ;)

(Daniel Johnston)

In his last post from SXSW Martin from The Faintest Ideas proves that not all Swedes are gaga for just a diet of indie pop alone. Martin reviews music/shows by Daniel Johnston, Gore Gore Girls, Old Time Relijun, White Ghost Shivers and The Clorox Girls.

“Hi,

I saw that Chris wrote about his last day at sxsw, so I thought I should do the same thing… but with more than just the last day…

As I had a hard time to figure out who were about to play when, it turned out that I got the wrong day for Clorox Girls so instead I went to see Old Time Relijun, who were great as always. The next day (friday) we all went to see the Buzzcocks play a day show which was quite nice, like seeing my uncles playing punk and shout “rock n’ roll” (as often as possible) before I got totally stuck in the poster exhibition where lucky me managed to run into a familiar looking troll named Keith Morris (from Black Flag and Circle Jerks), so I got to shake his hand and got a photo of him and me standing around like we were friends for lifetime. It seems like he is pretty into Turbonegro as he kept asking me about them for the breif minute we spoke, but it just might have been my denim jacket that made him think of them.

Then we had some time to spend before we had to be on stage so Joel, Ilona and I decieded to go and see Thurston Moore play some kind of improvisation jam, but after waiting in line for quite some time without getting anywhere we decieded to check out the band playing next door. And damn! The band was White Ghost Shivers, and they were one hell of an amazing live band! 30 minutes of very outacting jazz was enought thou, so we went back to the venue we was supposed to play to check out the Zebras and BOAT before it was our time to take the stage again. After our show we all hung around andwatched the other Magic Marker bands Manhattan Love Suicide and Tullycraft while watching indie pop celebs from The Lucksmiths, Mountain Goats, Architecture in Helsinki and Ladybug in the audience. I managed to take a photo of Peter from Mountain Goats taking a picture of Tullycraft, which was a bit fun at the moment, but now, I don’t really know why I did it.why I did it.

Saturday was our last day in Austin and as we didn’t have to play we got some time to wander around town and check out shops etc before it was time to see some more bands. We all realized that we lived just next door from an amazing record store called End of an Ear where we spent some time and money, and as usual, I ended up with some more Misfits records… I wonder why that keep on happening to me…? A few minutes after I left the store I was kind of amused with the nice pin I bought there as it said D.I.Y. in big green letters, which turned out yp be so d.i.y. that it fell apart when I tried to stick it onto my jacket! A the same time that happened someone said my name and an unfamiliar looking face turned out to be Jon from Abandoned Love Records who I met briefly few days earlier. So, sorry for not realizing it was you, dude. I have a really hard time to remember faces, so it’s not you, it’s me.

So, finally came the night and I was really into getting to see loads of bands, but instead I stood in line for an hour to see the Buzzcocks again, but never managed to get in, which meant that I missed Meat Puppets as well as they were playing as second band on that bill. Bummer for sure. After wandering around looking for coffee and juice for an hour or so and laughing at the Jesus freaks anti-rock demonstration me and Ilona decieded to go and see Kings of Leon as the line was so short and we wanted something to do before it was time for Daniel Johnston. Unlucky us thou, the short line was for VIP’s only and the real line was massive. At least we got to see KirstenDunst sneaking in to that show.By now we were kind of determined not to miss something more we wanted to see so we got to Daniel Johnston’s show extra early and got to seeVivaL’AmericanDeathRayMusic who turned out to be pretty OK, kind of like an progressive metal version of Victory at Sea.

After that it was finally time for Daniel Johnston again, and once again he was really good, and I got to see him rock it out on guitar in a few songs, which made me glad that I don’t play drums with him.As some of the members from The Manhattan Love Suicides was there as well Iasked them if they felt like getting in a cab and go across the town and seeGore Gore Girls play their set, which they kindly said no to as they weresticking around for the Saints, which I kind of had a plan to see as well, after Gore Gore Girls, but as they were pretty boring and I was so close to home, I just walked home instead, so all in all I did a pretty good job innot seeing even a handful of the bands I really wanted to see.

Fox In a Box – Gore Gore Girls

The last funny thing that happened was that I saw Lee Perry at the airport, which was pretty much the last person I excpected to see there. I assumed cthat he travelled by UFO, not by Luft Hansa.

All in all, Austin is a great place but sxsw is a little too much.

OK,

cheers
Martin”
