Hospital’s debut record When I spoke of love, I spoke of you will be out in September on the new Swedish label Bless The Press. “Lucy” is the title track and it features soaring harmonies, violin and rhythms that you might find out on the western plains. The song has a couple of odd yet powerful images (“your image carressing my eyelids”) but on the whole speaks plainly and honestly about the need for love.

New Faces Of Swdish Indie Pop Pt. 2 – Hospital (Bless The Press, September)
Tuesday, July 10th, 2007New Faces of Swedish Indie Pop Pt.1 – The Mare (Cloudberry Records, July 15)
Monday, July 9th, 2007
I can’t think of a better band to profile in the first of this series than The Mare. I’ve been pimping The Mare for a good two years or so. So when I come across some news about the band I generally post it. When it’s a new song it’s a cause for celebration. So today we celebrate. Cloudberry Records is about to release a 3 track 3″ cd ep by the band, 1/3 of which is available now online.
“Didn’t See You Coming” has all the elements of a Swedish lofi indie pop hit. It’s got the jangliest guitars this side of Manchester, certifiable twee vocals and an innocence that will play well with indie pop fans from here to Jakarta and from the Philippines to Olympia, Wa.

Debut Record From Swedish Jazz Improvisor’s "Boots Brown" (Mats Gustafsson)
Friday, July 6th, 2007
Boots Brown is Swedish free jazz at it’s finest. One of the main players in the group is Mats Gustafsson the renowned and critically acclaimed Swedish tenor saxophonist often associated with Greg Vandermark. This group features Mats along with Johan Berthling on kontrabass, David Stackenas on acoustic guitar and Magnus Broo on trumpet. This is accessible free jazz, it’s been called “ultra modern chamber jazz”. I like that there are not a lot of boundaries, the music is clearly improvised yet tuneful and no squaks unnecessarily.
The groups new record (debut!?) is out now on Slottet. Buy it here from DotShop.
Printer (Adrian Recordings)

Is all the great Swedish music gone? (I’ll answer that myself next week with a series of posts titled “The New Face Of Swedish Indie Pop”) The Swedish indie label Adrian Recordings has signed the Danish band Printer. To my ears “Minds Out” is fairly unassuming techno inspired pop. On the other hand apparently the folks at Adrian hear the missing link between the analog and digital domains; a band willing to explore the digital sound while retaining elements of your basic 4 piece rock band. What do you think?

Their love fell apart but they’re still together – x Partners from Malmo
Wednesday, July 4th, 2007
x Partners have a myspace page, a fetish for tigers and that’s about it. They’re from Malmo. They used to be band together, then they fell in love, then the love it went bad, and now they’re just called x Partners. They have a song called “C’mon Lets Be Friends” that pretty much explains it all.
It’s a bit of an electro-punk throwaway with shades of Wire and Gang Of Four but it’s the 4th here in the States so give me a break.
Shooting John’s first Single "War"
Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007
Shooting John have released the first single from their upcoming September release. The song is called “War” and features the rich vocals of lead singer Peter Gravlund. I’m impressed with this song, it reminds me of Willard Grant Conspiracy, Over The Rhine or Richard Buckner. The new record Happiness+- is out in September on Marilyn Records. It should be well received in Sweden where his last record did well at radio and retail, it’ll be interesting to see how this does abroad.
