Lissi Dancefloor Disaster interview

I’ve been really impressed by the electropop duo known as Lissi Dancefloor Disaster and now that they’ve been booked at Hultsfred I think a lot of other people will share my opinion of the band. Johan spent some time and answered a few of my questions about the band’s music, and it’s future.

1. How did the band form and how do you divide the process of creating/performing songs?

We met at a course at the Uppsala University. Before we both dropped the course, we discovered that we both loved music very much. So we started to work together, trying different music genres and styles. LDD was from the beginning Johan´s own music project, but as time went by Josefin became more and more involved in the project and LDD is now an electropop duo.

2. From the few songs I’ve heard you are mixing serious messages in with your style of electronica? Is that a conscious decision on your part?

We would not say that our music has any political message. Both of us think a lot about global problems, such as climate change, and we’re not satisfied with how the world works in different ways. This is mirrored in the lyrics, although we don’t have a political agenda. The lyrics more reflect the emotions of personal problems and global challenges.

3. You are giving your music away, even going as far as calling a song “Copyriot (Share This Song)?, do you see this as the future of music or just a means to an end (i.e. bigger fanbase, more shows, press etc)?

The “share this song” part of the name is a reference to the book “Steal this book”, the movie “Steal this movie” and the System of a Down record Steal This Record. We both believe that we get to play more shows and are able to reach a bigger fanbase by making the music available for everyone. That is why we share our music through on the internet, both through our own webpage lissidancefloordisaster.com and the Pirate Bay. It´s not a secret that Johan downloads a lot of music as well.

The musical experience is not – and should not be – reduced to the sound you get from a purchased CD. Live shows are at least as important. With today’s possibilities to download and share music, the music becomes available for many more -not just those who have the money to buy it. Which we like. A lot.

4. What are you looking forward to about your show at Hultsfred?

We are looking forward to rock everyone’s socks off and have a great time. We have gotten
a lot of attention from media since they released us on their lineup. To play at Hultsfred is a great chance for upcoming bands to show themselves for music lovers.

5. What was it like working with Sophie Rimheden?

It was nice. She is impressively kind and experimental.

6. What’s next for the band?

We have two gigs in Uppsala before Hultsfred. During the week of Hultsfred we will also release our second EP Counterpoint, which of course will be free to download at lissidancefloordisaster.com. After that we will play a lot! But we will also keep up with other music projects. One of the more exciting things happening right now is Josefin´s singer-songwriter project Josse (www.myspace.com/jossemusik). She will record a new EP when we get back from Hultsfred.
