Swedesplease In The News (Irish Times) And Electronic Music From Gothenburg’s Jonas & Kapstaden

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Swedesplease was in the news again. This time in Ireland of all places! The Irish Times did a great profile of Lykke Li where she really let loose on her country and the music industry. At the same time they did a little sidebar about the Swedish music phenomena called “The Swede smell of success” which referenced Swedesplease.

Alright enough about me. I think of Gothenburg as the capitol of the Swedish pop movement, but their are plenty of other genre’s represented by the city. Jonas and Kapstaden are an electronic duo from Gothenburg who have worked with Chuck Morgan among others. J&K have very little other info up on their MySpace but these two songs from 2008 speak for themselves.

Perfect Swedish Laptop Pop From Kuryakin (Shelflife, May 1)

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Tell me, what’s better than indie laptop pop? Swedish indie laptop pop, of course. Kuryakin have been perfecting their songs since they formed in 2003. Now through a series of ep’s and singles they are ready to unleash their perfect pop unto the world. Their debut ep, Still Here, is out now on Shelflife, they also have a two song ep called Fought A War out on the Japanese label Fast Cut here.

The title track encompasses all that Kuryakin strive for with it’s moody beats, floating synths and laid back vocals. Other songs from the ep incorporate shoegazey guitar solos and a bit of noise. But this is pure sugary pop at it’s best.

Buy the new EP/7″ combo here through Shelflife.

MishMash Swedish Post (New songs from Björn Kleinhenz, Parker Lewis and Addeboy Vs. Cliff)

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Lots of Swedish related music news coming into my inbox of late so let’s run down the latest:

First off Tomt Recordings has released a free single from the upcoming Björn Kleinhenz record Quietly Happy and Deep Inside. The song is “A Quest For Your Heart”.

A Quest For Your Heart

The production team of Addeboy Vs. Cliff have a new single out as well called “Red Button”. This is something Discobelle would have better luck writing up. In fact, for more info refer to their earlier post on a different song from Addeboy Vs. Cliff here.

After what seems like ages the new 4 track EP by Parker Lewis is officially out now on Mad For It. Parker Lewis is one of those rare artists that mixes a pop sensibility with electronic beats and stellar songwriting. All those elements are present in the song “Shelly” with it’s swirling synths, electronic beats, soaring distorted vocals, and melodramatic lyrics. You can download the entire ep for free here.

Ambient electronics from Teetie

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

It’s been almost a year since this ambient artist has updated his MySpace and at least that long since I checked back in on him. His songs and the minimalist nature of both his music and web presence is alluring/mystifying. I really love the song “Belmondo” from Teetie’s Mayspace page, but it’s streaming only so I’m linking to a more ambient track called “Kaalutus”. I think it’s just right for a sleepy Tuesday morning.

P.S. Thanks to something I saw on Nine Bullets, I’ve added a new comment system to Swedesplease. It’s supposed make the site more interactive; we’ll see.

Karin Ström is back with a new song, video and a remix by Pacific!

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

I was going to take the day off today. I’ve been sick for the last few days and am still recovering. But an email from Karin Ström with news of a new song, a remix by Pacific! and a voyeuristic video of Karin and her real girlfriends out on the town was too much to pass up. Karin Ström is a world traveler spending time in London, LA and of course Sweden. She was discovered and signed in London by Nettwerk Records, but then dropped after her American debut didn’t sell like expected. She’s now out on her own and living in NYC. This song is part of an Absolut Vodka ad campaign.

Karin Ström’s electronic dance music is a little light for my taste, it doesn’t have that odd beat signature of Skweeee or the chiptunes/8bit sound I’ve written about in the past. But the Pacific! remix adds just enough heavy bass and light hearted vocals to make it enjoyable.

Tafra’s “I’m Sorry Brakne-Hoby” (Series Two, Feb. 5)

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

I almost made the mistake of typecasting the music of Tafra on first listen. It was hard to avoid with the sweet vocals of Niklas Tafra. Then the horns kicked in and I was convinced I had this group figured out.

But the stereotyping probably began with the bio where it says he played on a SKWBN album (from the song below it sounds like he had a falling out with those guys).

The first song I listened to started out as a simple indie pop song (nothing wrong with that, right?), but after about two minutes the vocals disappeared to be replaced by a steady, undulating beat.

Tafra’s new record Why Even Bother was released by the Nebraska label Series Two on Feb. 5.

Erik Levander’s wonderfully noisy electronic song “Tölvupop” (Rumraket, March 17)

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Erik Levander is a Swede living in Berlin. He was in the news awhile back when he and his label (Rumraket) had a fund drive to raise money to recover his music from a dead hard drive. Not sure what the final result of that was (Puddlegum does though), but the new record is now ready. It’s called Kondens and seems to be inspired more by the ultramodern city of Berlin than the green countryside of Sweden.

“Tolvupop” demonstrates Erik’s love of dissonant noise followed by calm with an underlayment of electronic fuzz. This is not electronic music to dance to nor is it merely noisy drone meant for sound installations at the local modern art museum. It’s meant to be enjoyed and experienced. So do.

New Single from My Darling YOU!

Monday, February 11th, 2008

I’ve been as big a fan of My Darling YOU! as you can be. Perhaps the biggest. But their new single, “Jump The Train”, is so completely unmusical that it’s physically painful to listen to.

I like the basic beat alright and the samples throughout, but the lack of melody or even singing in key (or in tune for god’s sake) makes this hard to recommend.

Here’s the video for “Jump The Train” with pretty clever animation that can’t hide this marred track. The 12″ is for sale now through Luxury.

Here’s a couple tracks from the My Darling YOU! back catalog that will help get the bad taste out of your mouth:

New song from Animal Keyboard (plus the new single from Parken – produced by Rigas)

Friday, February 8th, 2008

I wrote a post about Animal Keyboard a year ago and expected it to start a landslide of coverage for this Swedish 8bit artist. I mean, come on, the guy makes his music using a toy animal keyboard. How cool is that? The man behind the cute little animal sounds and c64 blips and beeps is Martin Wiklund. I posted a song off his 2006 demo but in the meantime songs have appeared from 2007. Here’s “Good Vs. Bad”.

Good Vs. Bad

————–

Flora/Fauna has released the first single from a forthcoming record from Parken. It’s been produced by Rigas so it has a bit of that throbbing, fuzzy beat and background synth sounds he’s become know for in his own work. If you don’t mind the language barrier (assuming your not Swedish) this song will grow on you in a matter of minutes.

Electronic music from the new EP from Vargpaktan

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

I like the video game intro and the overall sound of “Yelt” by Vargpaktan but once the distorted, processed vocals kick in I get a little ambivalent. Then they start to sound a bit too much like Green Day on speed.

This dj collective from Stockholm has released a number of ep’s. This song is off their latest.

Lissi Dancefloor Disaster (Remix by Sophie Rimheden)

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

I probably would have glazed right over the netlabel-like electro house of Lissi had she/they not name-dropped Sophie Rimheden. I’ve been following Sophie R. since I started this blog so I was interested to hear her remix of Lissi Dancefloor Disaster’s track “Oh My God”. I know virtually nothing about this style of electronic house music but I like what I hear here. The song is about the connectivity the internet provides and it’s stuttering electronica and processed vocals gives the song a fitting computer/robotic feel. If you have a comment on the relative merit of this song/remix please leave it in the comments.

Oh My God (Sphie Rimheden remix)

P.S. Three administrative things of note.

Firstly, the radio feature on the right is working like a charm. For a few weeks it was skipping every other song but now it’s working brilliantly. Check it out!

And secondly, the email subscription service to the right is also fully functional and pretty cool. When I update the site you’ll get an email notification along with the post. So sign up if you’re interested.

Finally, I just completed an interview with Sweden’s largest local newspaper, I’m told it’ll run this Sunday in the arts section of Helsingborgs Dagblad. If I get a link I’ll include that on Monday but keep an eye out.

I Always Wanted A Pony (winner of “the best twee band name that isn’t a twee band name” award)

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

I Always Wanted A Pony is the band name of a Swedish dj that clearly idolizes Daft Punk and Kraftwork. There’s a discussion going on online at the moment on the merit of the Swedish band Studio. The question is whether their retro electronica is slightly derivative or just plain stolen. I haven’t heard enough dance/house/electronica to come to any educated conclusion, but I imagine there’s only so much you can do with a throbbing beat and electronic noises. So yes, probably derivative, but fun nonetheless.

That’s my opinion of I Always Wanted A Pony.

Strobe Light
Lou Reed Never Came From Metropolis

P.S. I know it’s a cliche and it’s my least favorite phrase that’s plastered to cd jewel cases of some truly horrible bands, but nonetheless you’ve got to crank this up a bit to get the full effect.

Bongored

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

Here’s some funky experimental electronic dub. The group name is Bongored and while I don’t know exactly what that translates into in English I’m guessing it has something to do with getting really high….at least that’s what you hear in the songs. “Stripping The Bananas” is a track with an MC rapping over a pretty solid beat. “Beware Of The Synths” has that video game feel I love, plus deep bass and futuristic synth lines. All of this is the work of one Luc Deutschmann. I’ve read somewhere that he’s working on his debut – this is some start!

More blips, beeps and whirs from Swedish c64/8bit artists – New songs from Goto 80

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

I didn’t have that much to say about Goto 80 (they don’t like MySpace, click to see – so try here as well) when I posted one song back in 2005. I’ll try to elaborate a bit more now. Goto 80 is one of these swedish dj driven 8bit or c64 bands. They elevate the music you remember from 80’s video games to a more danceable, more complex level but usually staying within the framework of the basic sound. On Goto 80’s new record, Made On Internet, for the German label Pingipung, they break out of the mold by adding mc’s, guest artists and a more layered sound. In fact by the end of the song “Happy Daze” it builds to such a cacophony that you’d swear you’ve got multiple files playing at once. On “Error Energy” Anders Carlsson (Goto 80) adds his own vocals to the beeps, blips and whirs making the track more conducive to the dancefloor but maybe less conducive to contemplative listening.

P.S. Swedesplease Radio Player:

The Swedesplease radio widget is back. This time it’s being brought to you by this cool Facebook app that let’s you stream your favorite mp3 blogs right from your Facebook page. Here’s the homepage and be sure to add Swedesplease and Songs:Illinois to your favorites. Btw the player is accessing old tracks because of our url change but should be up to date later this week so keep an eye on it.

More c64/8-bit video game electonica – Pandaland

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

I can’t quite get the story straight about Pandaland. It appears that this is the soundtrack to an actual video game. Could be hoax however and there is no game, since the game site is down. Either way as you no doubt now know I’m a fan of Swedish c64-style electronica. This stuff sounds great. Here’s a couple from Pandaland.

Two eagerly awaited songs from Stockholm’s “Most Valuable Players” (plus something new from Robotboy)

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

There’s a short little essay on the Friendly Noise site about how long we’ve been waiting for new music from Most Valuable Players and how great it is that after two years there are finally some new songs. Unfortunately what they don’t say is that these two new songs are such a huge disappointment.

For a second or two at the start of “Rondo” it sounds like MVP might be up to their old tricks but then the scratchy beat fades into the background replaced by lazy off-kilter vocals. To my ears this is a drastic departure from the more high energy urban tracks from their debut “You In Honey”. If this is your first exposure to MVP perhaps you’ll like this track but if you’re an old fan I expect you’ll feel the same as I do.

Rondo

Since I’ve never really been exposed to Robotboy’s music before I’m more willing to give his songs a chance and his track “September” has immediately crept under my skin. There’s one more song by each of these artists on the Friendly Noise site here.
