PURPL PoP

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I turned off comments on this blog a while ago to combat spam (and people who tried to correct my spelling) but I’m going to turn them back on today so we can discuss “The Way” from PURPL PoP. Tell me what you think. Share your thoughts.

This is the debut single from this Swedish duet. They’re clearly having fun.

The Way

The Ultimate Swedish Hip Hop Site (plus Swedish Music For Dummies and lots of electronic goodies from the netlabel Swedish Columbia)

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I’m kind of taking the day off today from regular posting since my kids are out of school for the day. But I did want to share with you some tidbits I discovered over the weekend.

People look at me incredulously when I say I write a Swedish indie music blog. They can’t understand that Sweden produces enough great music to have a daily blog devoted to it. But I’ve recently been trumped by the great new site My Best Friend Is My Grind. This site has been up for a couple months and is devoted solely to Swedish hip hop and rap. The site is smooth and is easy to use. It looks and acts like it’s been up for years. The guys behind this site are so deep into the hip hop scene and cover it so relentlessly that they really put any other site on the net to shame. I highly recommend this site.

I came across another Swedish site that is much more general and broad in its coverage. But since I’ve been poking around I’m very impressed with her coverage. The site is called Swedish Music For Dummies.

I’ve got a couple tips as well for you today including new music from Penny Century, GoCart System and electronic music from the Swedish Columbia Collective.

–Download the new(ish) Penny Century EP here.
–GoCart Systems Always Been The Same here.
–And a whole bunch of Electronic goodies from Swedish Columbia here.

Here’s one mp3 that from BMK (courtesy of the netlabel Swedish Columbia):

Girls In The City

A mixtape and a riddim from Militia Sound Crew

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

I slipped a video by Jas The Cat & Jahmal into the mix last week. I didn’t comment on it at the time. But I liked it and went to explore the web for more about these guys. I found a website for Jahmal and his group Militia Sound Crew. This is more the reggae side of his sound with a couple mixtapes and “riddims” available on their site. Here’s a link to their new mixtape and their new “riddim”.

The Swedish Electro Hip Hop Of Ghostpony

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Ghostpony went live on Myspace yesterday. They have no comments yet and only a couple friends (influential ones though like Lykke Li, Juvelen, and Rigas). Needless to say the band (one guy?) doesn’t have much of a biography/discography yet, which is good because I don’t have any time to parse it (I’ve got to work out and then pick up the kids at school). What I do know for sure is that these two songs below are on a 5 song EP that’s due out in November. Contact the band through MySpace for more info.

“Love To Hate” isn’t mindless techno. It tells a cute little story of a relationship gone bad. The synthesized guitar solos and groovy beats are a nice addition. Think a more deranged Depeche Mode, Prince in his Black Album period, or a subtler, more refined NIN. So what do you think? Don’t leave me hangin’ in the comments section.
